Both things can be true
During discussions with coaching clients, I am hearing a trend, where people are grappling with two or more opposing emotions simultaneously and assuming that there needs to be a dominant (often positive) emotion at any one time.
It is linked with the belief that certain emotions are wrong or unacceptable. Causing those emotions to be suppressed, bypassed or ignored.
Life is as we know not binary. Dr Becky Kennedy in her book Good Inside developed the idea of ‘multiplicity’ - that we can accept more than two realities at once.
So….
· We can love our job, and it can be stressful.
· You love your children, and they can still drive you crazy.
· We can work hard for a promotion, be happy when we achieve it and, yet feel unfulfilled, even depleted.
· You can love your family and still have deep wounds as a result of family experiences.
· You can be terrified to make the next step and yet know it is right for you.
· You can be afraid to fail and still believe in yourself.
What happens when you let multiple contradictory emotions coincide? To move more deeply into what is real and present for you, not override or bypass it.
I am curious to hear.
